Creating choral art at the highest level, Tenebrae is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles renowned for its passion and precision. Its extensive recording catalogue comprises a wide range of music and has earned the choir two BBC Music Magazine Awards, an Edison Classical Music Award and a Grammy nomination. A jewel in the crown of British cultural life for over two decades, Tenebrae has been pursuing the vision outlined by its founder and artistic director Nigel Short, a former member of the celebrated vocal ensemble The King's Singers: to sing with the passion of cathedral choirs and the precision of chamber choirs.
The choir runs a thriving Learning & Connection programme, which includes various intergenerational partnerships and workshops with amateur choirs, and has earned international acclaim for its interpretations of choral music from the Renaissance through to contemporary masterpieces. The choir’s wide-ranging and exciting programme titled A Celestial Gift encompasses five centuries of sacred music, while also commemorating the quincentennial of the birth of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.
