Candide, The Age of the Enlightenment’s Critique of Naivety
Voltaire’s Candide is a philosophical tale, a short novel encapsulating the key aspects of its author’s worldview. Voltaire emphasized the importance of an individual for the healthy development of society, and mercilessly satirized all extremist views and judgments, including radical ideological beliefs.
Candide is an ironic attack on its hero’s naivety and Leibniz’s philosophy of “the best of all possible worlds” – the notion that the actual world must be the best one humanly possible – told with Voltaire’s inexhaustible wit, redemptive humour that is the only endurable medicine in an often unendurable world.
The event will be held in Slovenian without translation.
