2025/26 Music of the World Season Series – Glasbe sveta
From Eastern Anatolia to Japan, our neighbouring countries and back on home turf
World music, or global sounds as they are more properly called today, are in fact a hypernym for a wide variety of styles, genres, idioms and ways of playing traditional and new instruments, which not only constitute the musical characteristics of a particular culture, but above all carry the historical-political record of the geographical area in which they were formed. In the new season, we will visit various "terre incognitae" in topo- and ethnographic terms, from Eastern Anatolia to Japan, our neighbouring countries Hungary and Italy, which, despite their "familiarity", invariably tend to surprise and inspire us, and finally – why not –, explore our own backyard.
Twenty years after selling out two concerts at the Križanke Summer Theatre, the Terrafolk band is making a comeback, and will celebrate its anniversary in March 2026 with Bojan Cvetrežnik and the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra in CD’s Gallus Hall. The Music of the World season opens with the Kurdish musician Ali Doğan Gönültaş whose soulful and stunning voice will take us to the mountainous Eastern Anatolia this upcoming November. His startling but also joyful testament to life in the cradle of Indo-European civilisation was one of the finest concerts at last year's WOMEX Worldwide Music Expo. At this largest global music showcase, Hungarian singer Mónika Lakatos won the 2020 Artist Award, becoming the first singer of Romani heritage to ever receive the prestigious WOMEX Award.
In Slovenia, Mónika Lakatos and the Gipsy Voices will mark the World Roma Day in April 2026. From Salento, located at the southern end of Italy's Apulia region, comes Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Italy’s longest-standing traditional music ensemble – celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025! In February, we are hosting a show-stopping attraction, the 20-member Japanese drumming ensemble Kodo. In order to reach the highest level of playing the taiko drums – a tradition dating back to the 6th century – its members voluntarily isolate themselves on Sado Island for several years to hone not only the craft of drumming, but also their physical skills and ethical virtues, as well as being schooled in rituals – such as tea ceremonies. And in May, Linhart Hall will provide the venue for a Druga Godba concert, a Slovenian festival pledged to excellence in world music promotion for more than four decades.
Join us for an exciting musical journey!
