Directed by the legendary theatre director Paolo Magelli, I Am the One Who I Am Not deals with three generations of women: a young woman burdened with family heritage, a mature woman in a business and artistic milieus, and a lady in her golden years. Their stories unfold in a still patriarchal society. Male characters are just as complex as the women protagonists.
The show's humour systematically moves between vibrant comedy, dark humour, a grotesque and tragicomedy, not even steering clear of melodrama. Such a dynamic is a perfect vehicle for characterizing the protagonists and revealing their personae, at the same time providing a reason to laugh at life’s trials and tribulations where, as a rule, women pay the highest price. Still, human figures – and their sadness – are all that remains on the stage in the end.
