Cankarjev dom has commemorated the year of Ivan Cankar with the Cankar on Cankar Festival, an event including an extensive and diversified programme of theatre and music performances, exhibitions, talks and an international symposium. In January 2018, Cankar’s farce Scandal in the St Florian Valley was staged in co-production with the Slovenian National Theatre Drama Ljubljana and the Ljubljana City Theatre. The production registered nearly 20,000 spectators.
The central event of the festival is a two-venue exhibition – at Cankarjev dom and the City Museum Ljubljana, which is on view until 28 February 2019.
The City Museum’s Ivan Cankar exhibition is dedicated to the artist’s life, and the extensive and exhaustive Ivan Cankar and Europe – From Shakespeare to Kafka, on show at the CD Gallery and extending also to the adjacent Duša Počkaj Hall, focuses on Cankar’s art against the background of European literature, its basic premises, influences and impulses.
The accompanying programme will feature lectures by Dr Jacques Le Rider (Fin-De-Siecle Vienna), Dr Janko Kos (Cankar and Europe) and Dr Blaž Vurnik (Cankar between Vienna and Ljubljana).
In 2018/19, the Cankar on Cankar Festival will include a small-scale exhibition, I Am Ivan Cankar – And That Says It All!, theatre performance Bailiff Jernej and an international symposium on Ivan Cankar.
