Originality of programmes and interpretations is a hallmark of internationally renowned Estonian conductor Olari Elts, who performs with numerous European, Asian and Australian orchestras. In the present season, he made his debut with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, but he also serves as the principal guest conductor of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra.
He will be joined by the excellent Finnish clarinettist Kari Kriikku, who engages mainly with contemporary repertoire and is regarded as one of the most popular interpreters of works by many composers of our time, including Vinko Globokar. On this occasion, he will appear as the soloist in the Clarinet Concerto by Kaija Anneli Saariaho, who is also from Finland. Based in Paris, Saariaho developed her own style, growing out of serialism and shifting towards spectral and electroacoustic music, after her experiences at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique).
The programme will be marked by the scent of the sea, with popular programmatic works by Debussy, Britten and Sibelius.
