George F. Handel
Oreste, opera in three acts, HWV A11, concert performance

Handel’s operatic masterpiece Oreste is a stylistically coherent pastiche for which the composer assembled a collection of arias from his earlier operas and oratorios, binding the music seamlessly with the newly-written recitatives to create a new musical drama. This rarely performed work is tackled by a winning team: the enthusiastic Il Pomo d'oro, “Orchestra of the Year 2018” (Gramophone), charismatic and inspiring Maxim Emelyanychev, recipient of the prestigious “Newcomer of the Year 2019” opera award, and the brilliant countertenor Franco Fagioli, “Argentinian Singer of the Year” (2017).

The Ljubljana audiences’ darlings are returning in the company of great vocalists; Julia Lezhneva – whose music releases have won several prestigious awards (Echo Klassik, Muse d'Or, Diapason d'Or, etc.), and Francesca Aspromonte – a specialist in Baroque opera roles, as well as several rising stars in the operatic firmament who are rapidly establishing themselves as some of the most interesting young voices for the Baroque repertoire.

Drawing on mythological material adapted from Euripides' tragedy, Handel's Oreste reimagines the famous story about matricidal antihero Orestes and his long lost sister Iphigenia, this time in a concert performance.

Maxim Emelyanychev is a man on springs: he directs from the keyboard with almost manic intensity, alert to every rhythmic nuance in the score, urging his players on like a coachman driving a team of mane-tossing thoroughbreds.

Even in a concert performance, Franco Fagioli completely inhabits the part ... He flounces, he preens, he purrs, he prowls ... decorates and embellishes with astonishing ease and supreme musicality.

Il Pomo d’Oro, perhaps the most exciting Baroque ensemble of all time.
