One of the leading figures of the 1990s French and international dance and hip-hop scenes, director and choreographer Mourad Merzouki applies his creative genius to producing an explosive hybrid of art forms. With his multidisciplinary approach, Merzouki blends elements of contemporary circus, martial arts, dance, visual arts, and advanced interactive media.

In 1996, in order to develop his own artistic style and sensitivity, Merzouki established Company Käfig. In Arabic Käfig means ‘a cage’, pointing to the choreographer’s receptivity and openness and his refusal to become locked into a single style. In 2009, he was appointed director of the National Choreography Centre of Créteil and Val-de-Marne, a platform for cutting-edge dance production that also aims towards educating new generations of dancers and providing technical support and training to freelance artists.

Pixel explores the way the synthetic world of state-of-the-art technology interacts with the dancer’s reality, both retaining their intrinsic nature while melting into one. Like an organism merging two different entities to give shape to a third one. Technology is not employed merely with a view to producing special effects, but serves as a vehicle transporting the dancers into a new dimension, a realm coupling fascinating ‘digitalised’ precision with physical poetry of the dancers’ bodies. A visual treat, Pixel is a show at the crossroads of arts envisioning our shared high-tech future.
