Greek Drama – Today and in the Past

Lecture by Dr. Constantina Ziropoulou (University of Thessaloniki, University of Peloponnese, Hellenic Open University and University of Patras)

The talk aims to outline the modern approach to ancient Greek theatre within the context of the current cultural and economic situation in Greece. It will present major landmarks in the history of reviving the theatre of ancient Greece from the birth of the independent Greek state until the present day.

Representative examples of famous modern-day productions of ancient Greek plays will also be illustrated. Dr. Ziropoulou’s areas of research include the role of ancient drama on all levels of Greek education system and the concerns of ancient theatre that (can) have contemporary relevance.
