Great artists

A sculptor and an architect – great artists who markedly influenced their time, and great friends. Ivan Meštrović (1883–1962) was the most prominent Croatian sculptor, and Jože Plečnik (1872–1957) the most prominent Slovenian architect. They lived in the same period, both coming from a modest background and the historical context of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; both studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and were members of the Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession. They soon demonstrated their amazing talent and achieved international distinction. They knew each other personally, appreciated each other’s art, worked together and developed a lifelong friendship. The exhibition provides an insight into this special relationship.
