Works of the finest Slovenian illustrators on view until 19 March at the CD Gallery.
The vibrant images and delightful characters of book illustrations bring to life the story most vividly and leave an indelible and lasting impression. You are cordially invited – children and children at heart, dreamers, storytellers, artists and lovers of everything beautiful and magical – to see more than 200 illustrations that will draw a few laughs (and perhaps even make your eyes tear up).
Also on show are illustrations by Marjan Manček,this year’s winner of the Hinko Smrekar Lifetime Achievement Award. Manček has illustrated an incredible number of children’s books, including, most notably, Mojca Pokrajculja, Pedenjped (Littlelad), Zlata ribica (Goldfish), Peter Klepec, Kozlovska sodba v Višnji Gori (Goat's Sentence in Višnja Gora), Zrcalce (Mirror) and Princess and the Pea. What provides his visual narratives, vividly drawn and vibrantly coloured, with a special quality is Manček’s unique incisiveness, the insight with which he humorously, with an occasional touch of waggish fun and even satire, adds interest and appeal to the story. In Manček’s art, humour and satire are equivalent: he refuses to confine himself to solely one, feeling that when administered singly satire might infuse his work with a caustic tone, and humour render it too sugary. This is also one of the reasons why Manček’s illustration is invariably fresh and relevant to its time, both conveying a sense of fantasy and possessing timeless qualities.
The central overview of Slovenian illustration, the Biennial unites older and younger generations of illustrators employing diverse artistic methods and rewards their finest achievements with the Hinko Smrekar Award, as well as the Smrekar distinctions and accolades. The 2016 Life Achievement Award goes to Marjan Manček, presentation of his works will be curated by Tatjana Pregl Kobe. For the past forty years Marjan Manček has employed illustration as his main vehicle of expression, infusing it heavily with his signature humour.
