Blue I and II

The Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra

Conductor: Guillermo Garcia Calvo; soloist: David Garrett, violin

Programme:

G. Rossini, La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie), Overture

N. Paganini, Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor, Op. 7 (La Campanella)

A. Dvořák, Symphony No. 6 in D major, Op. 60

Although the popular overture to the opera The Thieving Magpie was immediately “put into the drawer” of opera buffa, it contains a sufficiently tragic and dark quality for Stanley Kubrick to have used it in his filmic masterpiece, The Clockwork Orange.

Paganini’s Second Violin Concerto, with its famous third movement, La Campanella, is perhaps less ostentatious than the composer’s other concerti, but it nonetheless still allows the soloist to enthuse the public with a complete palette of technical masterpieces.

Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony was for many years incorrectly labelled as his first, as it was the first of the composer’s symphonies to be published by Simrock. Dedicated to the renowned German conductor, Hans Richter, it is a kind of synthesis and culmination of the composer’s Czechoslovakian creative period.
