The young Chinese pianist Yuja Wang has asserted herself as one of the most important artists of her generation. Regularly lauded for her controlled, prodigious technique, Yuja has been praised for her authority over the most complex technical demands of the repertoire, the depth of her musical insight, as well as her fresh interpretations and charismatic stage presence. Having been shot to fame already at a young age, the recording of one of her earliest performances has continued to inspire enthusiasm.
Yuja graduated in 2008 from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in the class of Prof. Gary Graffman, also mentor to Lang Lang, another sterling Chinese pianist. In 2006 she received the Gilmore Young Artist Award, and was in 2010 awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Following her debut recording, Sonatas & Etudes, Gramophone magazine named Yuja the Classic FM 2009 Young Artist of the Year. For her second recording, Transformation, Yuja received an Echo Klassik Award as “Young Artist of the Year”. She is a dedicated performer of chamber music appearing at summer festivals throughout the world including annual appearances at Switzerland’s Verbier Festival. Conductor Claudio Abbado was one of the first to recognise Yuja’s talent; she joined Abbado at the Lucerne Music Festival and performed with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and Maestro Abbado on a tour of China. Yuja Wang annually holds over one hundred concerts with some of the world’s most prominent orchestra, such as the New York Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, under conductors of such eminence as Michael Tilson Thomas, Gustav Dudamel and Zubin Mehta.
The piano recitals of Yuja Wang are devised in line with her temperamental nature and, according to the musician herself, “in equilibrium between quality and curiosity”. Such is also the programme to be presented in Ljubljana; technically highly demanding and at the same time emotionally profoundly expressive, sensitive and poetical.
